Stemming
Stemming is a sensory routine used as a calming mechanism. This may involve the use of an object, the floor, the wall, or even physical connection with the parent. Whatever it may be, let the process play out. It can be triggering for a child to have their stemming routine disrupted and can be met with very disruptive behaviors.
Rocking, Spinning, pacing, Headbanging
While these behaviors can also be considered stemming, they can be dangerous depending on where they are done and how much. While ABA will try to address these behaviors, they may or may not be able to redirect these behaviors as they may be part of their stemming routine. Safety measures should be taken if this is the case and notify your ABA therapist, case manager, and other providers and supports of these behaviors.
